False positives happen when product names or tags share a word with a query but belong to a completely different product type
REFINE
Define what to exclude, query by query
Set the search query and enter the words in product details that are triggering the wrong results. Tagalys hides any matching product from both results and suggestions for that query.
Stop the wrong products showing up in your search results
Search matches products by the words in their data. Sometimes those words appear in the wrong places.
Refine Search Results lets you exclude specific products from a search query by identifying words in product details that are causing false positives. A shopper searching for "shirt" should not see shirt dresses or t-shirts unless they want them. You define what to hide and for which query, and Tagalys removes those results cleanly.
No code. No catalogue changes. Just accurate results for every query that matters.
Tagalys makes merchandising effortless on Shopify Plus. Their data-driven sequencing and sorting drastically improved our effectiveness. Tagalys takes the guesswork out of merchandising and product recommendations.

Common questions
Everything you need to know
Tagalys Refine Search Results is a feature within Search Analysis that lets you exclude specific products from a search result when they appear for the wrong reasons. Tagalys matches products to a search query based on attributes, tags, and fields in your product catalogue. When certain fields contain words that overlap with a query, products that are not relevant appear alongside the right ones. Refine Search Results lets you define which words in product details should trigger an exclusion for a particular query, removing those products cleanly without any changes to your catalogue.
A false positive is when a product appears in search results because it technically contains the query term, but is not what the shopper is looking for. A shopper searching for "dress" may see dress pants because the word "dress" is in the product name. A shopper searching for "suit" may get swimsuits mixed into tailoring results. A shopper looking for "boot" may find bootcut jeans appearing alongside footwear. The search engine is matching correctly based on the data it has, but the result is not useful to the shopper. Refine Search Results is how you fix this without touching your product catalogue.
You set the search query you want to refine and enter one or more words that should trigger an exclusion. If a product's details contain any of those words, it is hidden from both search results and search suggestions for that query. For the query "suit" you could hide results containing "swimsuit" so only tailoring appears. For the query "crop" you could exclude "crop trouser" so only tops show up. Any product with those strings in its catalogue details is excluded automatically whenever a shopper types that query.
No. Refine Search Results operates entirely within the Tagalys search layer. Your product data, tags, and Shopify catalogue are completely unchanged. The exclusion only affects what Tagalys shows in search results and suggestions for the specific queries you have configured. Everything else in your store remains exactly as it is.
Yes. When you set a refinement for a query, it applies to both the search results page and the search suggestions panel. A product excluded from results for "dress" will also not appear in text suggestions when a shopper starts typing that term.
Yes. Common words categorised as Ignore Words, such as "a", "an", and "the", cannot be used as refinement terms. Plural forms are not accepted, so you would enter "swimsuit" rather than "swimsuits." Special characters including apostrophes are also not supported. If a term you need is not accepted, using the singular form or a different identifying word from the product's details will typically achieve the same result.
Refine Search Results works at the individual query level. You keep your search index as it is but exclude specific words from one particular search result. It is the right tool when a single query is returning the wrong product type and you want a targeted fix without making broader changes. Search Accuracy works at the index level. A change there affects every search query in your store simultaneously. It is the right tool when an attribute or tag is causing false positives across many different queries and you want to fix it at the source. If the query "wrap" is returning the wrong product type in one result, fix it in Refine Search Results. If a combined tag like "Dresses and Skirts" is pulling wrong products into multiple searches at once, fix it in Search Accuracy.
Yes. Refine Search Results works alongside Merchandised Search, Search Boost, Synonyms, and Search Accuracy. Each addresses a different layer of search quality. Search Accuracy controls which fields are indexed and matched. Refine Search Results excludes products based on specific words in those fields. Merchandised Search gives you product level control over what appears and in what order. Using them together gives you a clean, accurate, and well merchandised search experience across your store.
